Schools on the Move was launched by The Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat in 2006 both to celebrate and to connect Ontario elementary schools that were making sustained progress in student achievement. Following the selection of the first cohort in 2006, three new cohorts have joined, in 2007, 2008 and 2009. There are now over 140 designated Schools on the Move.

Emerging from both the Schools on the Move themselves and the research literature are five major themes that describe the practices that are required to move schools forward:
monitoring student learning and setting direction
managing cultural change
focusing on teaching and learning
sharing and distributing leadership for learning
connecting with families and communities
These themes are captured in video vignettes from classrooms and schools that identify what these themes look like and sound like from the perspective of students, teachers, administrators and parents.
