About Thinking About Thinking

A two-part presentation exploring the development of literacy and higher-order thinking skills in the early years.

Setting the Stage for Independent Reading (Part 1) consists of six sessions exploring the introduction of the four roles model in primary classrooms. Strategies are suggested for supporting young children as meaning makers, code users, text users and text analyzers – and how to foster growth in each role by taking an integrated approach to literacy learning.

Becoming an Independent Reader (Part 2) consists of four sessions organized around key aspects of the developing literate learner. Strategies are suggested for the initital engagement in learning, getting students to share their thinking and fostering inquiry and reflection.

Used together, Setting the Stage for Independent Reading and Becoming an Independent Reader give a look at growth over time in four classrooms – Full Day K, Grade 1, Grade 1/2 and Grade 2. These classrooms were visited early in the school year 2010 and then again in the spring of 2011.

You are now in Setting the Stage for Independent Reading:

Session 1
Thinking as a Habit of Mind  introduces the four roles of the literate learner and explores strategies and processes that promote metacognition.

Session 2
Meaning Maker  focuses on the relationship between author and reader and examines questioning as a key strategy for making meaning.

Session 3
Code User  explores strategies that learners use to break the code of written language and investigates the role of metacognition in developing independent readers and writers.

Session 4
Text User  focuses on the relationship between the function and form of text and examines how representations of student thinking relate to purpose and audience.

Session 5
Text Analyzer  examines critical literacy as an approach to the exploration of ideas, perspectives and biases supported by all strands of the language curriculum.

Session 6
Integrating the Four Roles  explores metacogition and collaborative strategies for making thinking processes visible in relation to all aspects of the four roles of the literate learner.
