What is a Webcast?

A webcast is a media file distributed over the Internet using streaming media technology. As a broadcast may either be live or recorded, similarly, a webcast may either be distributed live or recorded. Essentially, webcasting is "broadcasting" over the Internet.

Webcast Walkthrough/Troubleshooting

Before You Start:

Make sure you are running Windows Media Player, version 9 or higher. To check the version, open Windows Media Player and in the Help menu choose About Windows Media Player. The window that opens up shows the version you are running. If you are having trouble finding the Help menu, try right-clicking on the top bar to bring up the entire File menu, or press Alt+h. If you find you are using a version earlier than version 9, please go to the following website to download the latest version: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/default.aspx

The Basics:

Once you have confirmed that you have version 9 or higher of Windows Media Player, you are ready to view our video stream. To watch the webcast, click on the streaming video link to automatically open Windows Media Player and begin buffering the video. Once the buffering has reached 100%, playback will begin.

If Windows Media Player does not open automatically, open it manually by selecting Windows Media Player from your Program Files. Once it is open, choose Open URL from the File menu, or press Ctrl+u. Then either copy and paste or type in the link for the streaming video-on-demand.

You can view a test stream anytime at the following link, which contains both video and audio:

Troubleshooting:

Windows Media Player won't connect to the video.

  • Try reinstalling Windows Media Player from the link at the top of the page.
  • You may be having problems with your local firewall. Consult with your local network administrator or IT department to resolve this.

The video stream stops mid-stream.

  • Press the Play button to reconnect to the stream.
  • If the Play button doesn't work close Media Player and click on the video link again.
  • This problem may be caused by a slow computer or too much web congestion during the course of the stream. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done to fix this, you may want to try the link at a later time.

There is no audio with the video.

  • Check to make sure the volume isn't set to low or muted.
  • Your sound card is not configured properly. Consult with your technical support staff to resolve this.
