Description of the Placement Situation

The placement is an Ontario Provincial Police detachment, which focuses on law enforcement and community involvement.  This particular detachment covers a large geographical area (urban and rural) in the west end of Metropolitan Toronto. It is a fairly large detachment with 25 civilians, 100 uniformed police officers, and 20 undercover police officers.

The student will be involved in administrative duties; attending court hearings and prison transport; platoon ride along; motor vehicle enforcement; patrolling; and community service.

·          the terminology and procedures for processing accident claims;

·          legal terminology when re-documenting files, purging files, and updating case files;

·          court proceedings and stages of trials;

·          court documents, e.g., subpoenas, traffic tickets;

·          bail hearing court;

·          prisoner transport;

·          legal defenses to criminal charges;

·          examination of discovery;

·          the rules police have to follow when making an arrest (procedural laws);

·          the legal rights of a person during a search, detention, and arrest;

·          investigation components of indictable offenses ranging from theft under $1000 to murder (serious indictable offense);

·          the process for traffic enforcement in an effort to prevent impaired driving;

·          cases of criminal negligence and offences against the criminal code, related to the use of motor vehicles, dangerous driving, and impaired driving;

·          safety as set out in the occupational health and safety standards legislation;

·          preparing community displays and speaking engagements.
