Context:

·          New hardware and software technologies are changing the way we live and work. The efficiency of hardware, operating systems, and software development have a major impact on business, industry, education, and entertainment.

·          You will use the knowledge and skills acquired in your Computer Engineering course and your Cooperative Education placement to demonstrate your understanding of the structure, function, and identity of current hardware and software products, and to describe various computer networks and operating systems. You will investigate and research the effectiveness of current hardware and software products being used in a small computer environment. You will provide information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a computer network versus a stand-alone computer system and recommend that the information technology department at the placement either upgrade or replace the existing computer system.

Task: Computer ‘Wiz Kid’ Takes Over Law Office

 

Student Notes

At your placement, you observe and take on many roles, including computer communications practitioner, information systems analyst, data analyst, and programmer or analyst. Each of these roles provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to complete this assignment.

 

Part A: Research

·          Interview the lawyers, the support staff, a receptionist and a law clerk to determine the needs and wants of the firm’s employees.

·          Analyse and identify the current operating systems, hardware, software applications, Internet, email service and assess/identify future needs of the law office.

 

Part B: Report

·          Prepare a report that is based on the facts and information identified through your research.

·          In your report, include:

-         recommendations to upgrade the existing system that will improve the effectiveness of the current network requirements. Include a database, file storage, Internet, email, and network system.

-         a cost analysis showing the equipment, peripherals, and software to replace all existing equipment with new equipment including operating system, hardware, and software (database, Internet, email).

-         an estimate of the amount of time required to have a new system installed.

·          Prepare a title page for your report, table of contents and a hand-out copy of your slide show.

 

Part C: Visual and Oral Presentation

·          Create an electronic presentation of your research findings that includes charts, graphs, and appropriate slide transitions. Include the information from Part A of this assignment.

·          Show the presentation to your teacher and your placement supervisor. Your presentation should be no longer than 20 minutes.
