Description of the Placement Situation

The placement is a three-chair hair salon, located on the second floor of a strip mall. There are two full-time hairstylists – one licensed, and the other an apprentice. They specialize in braids, colouring, weaves, and straightening.

The student will work as a hairstylist and aesthetics apprentice, engaged in duties associated with this industry.

·          safe handling of materials and safe working practices in the hairstyling and aesthetic industry;

·          how to shampoo hair, use dyes, colours, rinses, perms;

·          the environmental impact of hairstyling products;

·          the roles and contributions of salons to different groups in the community;

·          how styles are selected by the client and implication of these styles on one’s perceived identity;

·          how to successfully market a salon and its services to increase business.
