CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
While Some Assembly Required: An Instruction Manual for Learners has no direct correlation with curriculum, it supports the learner in accessing the curriculum in any discipline.

Content
Some Assembly Required: An Instruction Manual for Learners teacher's guide and student workbooks provide information about learning disabilities (LD): what they are, the challenges they pose, and some strategies people with a learning disability can use to cope. The resource is accurate and consistent with contemporary literature on the topic. Learning-disability-specific language is accompanied by life examples and analogies that enable the learner to understand the concepts as they are introduced.

Methodology
Learners are engaged in activities that adopt current educational practices – understanding concepts, communication skills, and applying concepts and skills in various contexts. There is a balance between opportunities for students to acquire knowledge and to respond to information shared about learning disabilities. The activities involve the learners in expressing ideas and following directions. Learners are encouraged to become self-advocates in their own learning process. Many concepts are teacher-directed through discussion, while learners could understand and work with other concepts independently. Teaching strategies and classroom management practices are included in the teacher's guide.

Assessment
No specific assessment strategies are included in the resource; however, student understanding can be assessed through observation.

Format
The resource consists of a teacher's guide and a series of three student books. Similar graphics are used in each of the books to support the concepts. Activities/tasks are easy to follow with graphics for visual support.

Bias
The resource is presented from a balanced perspective. It addresses the importance of sensitivity and empathy for students with learning disabilities (LD).

Review Recommendation
Some Assembly Required: An Instruction Manual for Learners is recommended as a supplementary resource to support learners in understanding learning disabilities and how best to meet their individual needs.
