Some Assembly Required: An Instruction Manual for Learners Books One, Two, and Three, plus Teacher's Guide

Publisher's Description

Students with learning disabilities are intelligent kids with a deficit in one or more areas related to learning. If only it were that simple in the classroom. LDs are not easily defined and people's experiences of LDs are as different as people can be. Some children with LDs reach us after years of being misunderstood, of not understanding themselves, of feeling lost. Many arrive in our classroom with a distaste for school or a disabling level of anxiety. Others are primed and ready for information about and an understanding of themselves and their LD. Some Assembly Required: An Instruction Manual for Learners is a series of short books written with middle school students in mind — grades 6, 7, and 8 — but it can be used as best fits your educational purposes. The more our students know about LDs, the better able they'll be to advocate for themselves in school, in post-secondary education, and at work.

Book One looks at how people learn and how students choose their academic focuses through their learning styles, interests and abilities. It explains how a learning disability interferes with learning and what can be done to help. It also presents a model for considering approaches to problem solving.

Book Two breaks down school tasks into three areas (daily work, studying and tests, and projects and assignments) and explains how students can approach each area. Students are asked to complete a short presentation project as practice.

Book Three prepares students for the changes and choices that will come in high school. It offers strategies for staying organized and on top of schoolwork, and it discusses Individual Education Plans and accommodations. Different career paths are also discussed, and a list of resources gives students, caregivers, and teachers a guide for further exploration of these issues.
