CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
The Black Bear Ecology Program/Écologie de l'ours noir supports educators in implementing science curriculum at the Grades 2, 4, and 7 levels.

Content
The resource is comprised of three components, namely, a grade level booklet for each of Grades 2, 4, and 7. A fourth common component, an activity book, accompanies the three grade components. The resource provides a basis for acquiring fundamental knowledge about black bears and their environment. The language used is grade-appropriate and error-free. The information is Canadian, reliable, and current.

Methodology
Within each of the grade level booklets, a variety of instructional strategies are in place that take into consideration various learning styles. These strategies include teacher-directed and, to a smaller degree, independent learning opportunities. The resource provides opportunities for learners to gather, synthesize, and demonstrate understanding in ways that reflect current educational theory and practice. No specific considerations or suggestions are made for supporting students with special physical needs or with ELL backgrounds.

Assessment
Black Bear Ecology Program/Écologie de l'ours noir is informational in nature, and provides teachers with only some suggestions regarding assessment strategies. The resource does not include examples of assessment tools.

Format
The layout is logical and promotes intuitive use. Each lesson follows a familiar pattern of introduction, middle, and closure. Blackline masters are clear, appropriate, and easily accessible. Glossary, appendices, and supplementary resources provide support to the resource.

Bias
There are no biases evident in the materials associated with this project.

Review Recommendation
The Black Bear Ecology Program/Écologie de l'ours noir resource package is recommended for use in science programs at the Grades 2, 4 and 7 levels.

Additional Comments:
Although pan-Canadian resources are mentioned in the resource lists, maps and discussions about habitat—such as those found in the Grade 7 guide—make this resource more applicable to Ontario-based instruction. Educators in other provinces can make use of the resource; however, modifications based on local geography will be necessary in order to enhance relevance.
