CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
The program supports many of the Reading, Writing, and Oral and Visual Communication expectations for Grades 3-6 from The Ontario Curriculum, Language, (1997). Students read fiction and non-fiction and analyze information from different sources; write for various purposes and use language conventions and new vocabulary. Opportunities are provided to communicate information and analyses and create media works.

Depending on the teacher's choice of activities, the program supports The Ontario Curriculum, Mathematics, (1997), for Grades 3-6 by addressing many of the overall expectations for Number Sense and Numeration (computations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals as well as problem solving) and for Data Management (organizing and interpreting data).

The program supports The Ontario Curriculum, Science and Technology, (1998) in the Life Systems Strand (particularly the Diversity of Living Things - Grade 6). It provides many opportunities for collecting, interpreting, and analyzing scientific data and experimentation for Grades 3-6.

Content
Up-to-date, accurate information in different formats uses appropriate terms and vocabulary. While the simple layout, font styles, and story would make it appropriate for only Grades 3 and 4 students, the activities and factual information are appropriate for older students as well. Most measurements are non-metric.

Methodology
Teachers choose from the challenging, non-sequential lessons with clearly defined objectives, sound instructional methodology, and background information. Multidimensional learning tasks are clearly and simply laid out and students are encouraged to think as they solve problems. Many opportunities are provided to gather and organize information, and humour and games are used to motivate learning. Modifications and More Ideas allow the teacher to vary the program or provide greater depth. Lessons often include Art and Geography.

Assessment
Simple evaluation strategies are clearly laid out in each lesson and extensive references (print, video, web-sites, and American Museums) are suggested.

Format
The good-quality, hardcover text uses excellent design and engaging graphics to hold the learners' attention. A variety of entry and exit points allow for easy navigation. A glossary is included in the student text. The Teacher's Guide is well-organized and useful. Some student work sheets are presented at a beginning and an advanced level. The kit contains 20 copies of the student Learning Books which would be an ideal class set for supplementary use.

Bias
No bias is evident and effort has been made to include a variety of body shapes and skin tones among the cartoon-like characters.
