CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
The Don't Bet On It kit supports educators in implementing Physical and Health Education curriculum at the secondary school level. It can also be used in other disciplines to support curriculum topics related to decision making, peer influence, media literacy, and social skills.

Content
The information is relevant, is presented in adequate depth to support knowledge and understanding, and is based on credible resources and expertise. Instructions for activities are presented clearly in an easy-to-follow format and language style. Symbols, diagrams, and graphics are accurate and help students to access the content.

Methodology
The presentation style, pace, and depth of the learning experiences are appropriate for secondary school students and support student engagement. The resource provides opportunities for learners to demonstrate their learning through activities such as discussions and debates. Activities are designed to encourage students to use the language of gambling to communicate their understanding.

Assessment
Students are given an entry quiz which could be used as an assessment for learning. There is also an exit quiz which could be used as an assessment of learning.

Format
The kit provides a number of colourful visuals to use during instruction, including a game and wall charts. A DVD containing the story of an adolescent, and primary source articles—such as a journal article and a newspaper article—provide additional opportunities for variety in presentation. The materials are of high quality and are durable.

Bias
This resource is inclusive in its activities. Common misconceptions among youth about who is likely to gamble are explored.

Review Recommendation
The Don't Bet On It kit is recommended as a resource to support curriculum delivery in the area of Physical and Health Education at the secondary school level. It is also recommended to support curriculum topics related to decision making, peer influence, media literacy, and social skills.

Additional Notes:

One error was noted in the credits of the DVD. The phrase "Principle Characters" should read "Principal Characters." The materials contain Canadian references and examples; however, for anyone living east of Ontario, the references are not as appropriate in terms of geography and culture. Reference is made to a gambling help line in Nova Scotia. References to help lines in other jurisdictions would be helpful.
