Curriculum Correlation
Expect the Unexpected supports grades 2 to 8 curriculum in Science, Social Studies, Geography, and Health and Physical Education related to the understanding of concepts about natural and human-made disasters, e.g., the cause, effect, and locations of hurricanes, floods, lightning; and, the personal safety skills and attitudes associated with emergency and disaster preparedness, e.g., preparing a family or school evacuation plan or the attitudes required during an emergency.

Content
Expect the Unexpected provides students (ages 7 to 13) with information about disasters, and develops the skills and attitudes they need to respond appropriately and safely during emergency situations. The program consists of three age-leveled sections: It can happen, be ready; Facing the unexpected, be prepared; and Be ready, be safe.

Each section of the program follows a similar format with age-appropriate lessons to introduce students to different natural and human-made disasters, e.g., earthquakes, chemical spills, floods, and hurricanes. Once students have a conceptual understanding of these disasters, the lessons and activities help them acquire the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to plan and respond appropriately in emergency situations. The purpose, intent, and instructions for use are clearly outlined in each Facilitator's Guide. The Activity Booklets are clear and easy-to-follow; however, some of the language-intensive activities may be challenging for some students. Two videos – Teddy Bear Boudou Saved from Waters, for ages 7- 11 and Natural Disasters, for ages 12-13 – provide background information that sets a context for the learning.

Methodology
The learning resource provides a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional and learning strategies and activities that will appeal to students. Student learning is not contingent upon them participating in the programming for previous age levels. Within each age-level section, teachers can choose individual lessons that meet their students' needs or they can have students complete the entire program as they integrate the activities into their curriculum. For activities in which students are asked to use skills or knowledge that are not explicitly taught in the resource, teachers will have to provide them with the necessary background before embarking on these activities.

Assessment
While assessment is not directly addressed in the resource, the activities can provide the basis for determining student achievement.

Format
Expect the Unexpected is a comprehensive kit that includes a Facilitator's Guide and a student Activity Booklet for each level, 2 videos, and a wall poster that poses relevant "Did You Know?" questions. Each age-level section is well-organized and intuitive to use. A number of activities provide a strong home connection, e.g., interviewing an older person about a disaster.

Bias
This resource, as a whole, is presented from a balanced perspective. There is a clear Canadian focus with students examining and researching natural disasters that occur predominantly in Canada.

Review Recommendation
Expect the Unexpected is recommended to support the grades 2 to 8 Science, Social Studies, Geography, and Health and Physical Education curriculums related to natural disasters, emergencies, and personal safety skills.
