Content
The Fourth R is a series of three units that focus on healthy relationships:
Unit 1: Personal Safety and Injury Prevention
Unit 2: Healthy Growth and Sexuality
Unit 3: Substance Use and Abuse
Each lesson contains detailed background information verified by health professionals, discussion questions, and assignments. Technical information is presented in language that is accessible to students.
Methodology
The suggested methodology is clearly stated with detailed instructions for setting the climate in the health classroom. The teaching/learning strategies consider a variety of learning styles. Optional activities and questions for further discussion provide suggestions for addressing the topics in more depth. There are suggestions for bridging between lessons in Unit 1, Lesson 2, page 16. There are ample opportunities for students to demonstrate problem-solving and thinking skills.
Assessment
There are opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning through a variety of tasks and quizzes. Assessment and evaluation tools are included; e.g., rubrics.
Format
The Fourth R lesson format is consistent and easy to follow, with expectations, materials, teaching/learning strategies, and resources listed. The resource includes overheads, handouts, and answers. The materials are contained in binders for easy access and organization.
Bias
The resource reflects an awareness and sensitivity to areas of bias, especially appearance, belief systems, and gender. The resource addresses some topics such as homosexuality and birth control with a caution that teachers should be aware of board policy and of school demographics when deciding to use the materials. Teachers in Catholic schools should be aware that Unit 2, Lesson 4, addresses the topics of birth control and cohabitation.
