Curriculum Correlation
The program supports many of the Reading, Writing, and Oral and Visual Communication expectations for Grades 3-6 from The Ontario Curriculum, Language, (1997). Students read fiction and non-fiction using a variety of strategies and write for various purposes. They use language conventions; acquire new vocabulary; communicate information; and produce and analyze media works.
Depending on the teacher's choice of activities, the program supports The Ontario Curriculum, Mathematics, (1997), for Grades 3-6 by addressing many of the overall expectations for Number Sense and Numeration (basic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals as well as problem solving). It also addresses many of the overall expectations of Data Management (collect, interpret, organize, and analyze data) and provides some Measurement activities.
The program supports The Ontario Curriculum, Science and Technology, (1998) particularly the Life Systems Strand (Diversity of Living Things for Grade 6 -classification systems). It provides many opportunities for collecting and analyzing scientific data and experimentation that apply to Grade 3-6.
Content
Excellent reading material in different formats provides up-to-date, accurate, and detailed information in interesting, accessible ways. Many opportunities are provided to gather and organize information. Most information is general, but some references are solely American and most measurements are non-Metric.
Methodology
Teachers choose from the many challenging, non-sequential lessons and factual information is presented in several formats to allow for different learning styles. Clearly defined objectives, sound instructional methodology, and background information are given in each lesson. Multidimensional learning tasks are clearly and simply laid out and encourage students to solve problems. More Ideas and Modifications allow the teacher to vary the program or provide greater depth. Art and Physical Education ideas are included in some of the lessons.
Assessment
Simple evaluation strategies are clearly laid out in each lesson. References (print, video, American Museums/University collections, and web sites) are suggested.
Format
The hardcover text's excellent graphics are quite engaging but would appeal more to the Grades 5 and 6 students and the layout may pose difficulties for many of the younger students. A variety of entry and exit points allow for easy navigation. A glossary is provided in the student text. The Teacher's Guide is well organized and useful. Some student work sheets are presented at both a beginning and an advanced level. The kit contains 20 copies of the student Learning Books which would be an ideal class set for supplementary use.
Bias
No evident bias.
