CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
Veux-tu Jouer? targets a specific issue identified by researchers and educators regarding second-language development – that of the fossilization of certain errors. The resource supports curriculum across grade levels by presenting a systematic approach for the prevention and correction of errors made in French.

Content
Veux-tu Jouer? consists of an extensive teacher's guide, a CD of eight French songs, a set of posters, and laminated language cards. The teacher's guide provides a well-researched and well-documented rationale for the purpose of the resource. There is an emphasis on Canadian content, including the use of Canadian artists, musicians, researchers, and educators. The guide provides clear and easy-to-follow instructions for implementing the program. Each song on the CD focuses on a specific error and the correction required. A set of language cards related to each song helps students reinforce correct language structures.

Methodology
The resource reflects current educational theory with regard to the need for error correction and prevention. By placing an emphasis on singing and learning songs, preparing performances, and playing games, the resource has an appeal to a wide range of grade levels in core, extended, and immersion French programs. Teachers will need to decide on instruction strategies that reflect the age and ability levels of their students. The teacher's guide provides extension activities related to multiple intelligences theory.

Assessment
In the teacher's guide, there are pre- and post-test activities and tracking sheets for student responses to each song. Teachers are encouraged to prepare their own rubrics. There are limited suggestions for students to assess their own learning and create goals.

Format
The multi-component format is practical and easy to implement with colourful materials to engage students.

Bias
The resource is presented from a balanced perspective.

Review Recommendation
Veux-tu Jouer? is recommended to support elementary and secondary students in core, extended, and immersion French As a Second Language classes in addressing error prevention and correction.
