Content
This learning resource consists of a comprehensive Teacher Resource Guide presented in a binder and an interactive CD Rom designed for student use. The Teacher Resource Guide provides a program overview and detailed lesson plans, assessment notes, activity suggestions, and black-line masters for 3 units of study - Tessellations, Patterns and Rules, and Data Management and Probability. The program includes suggestions for connecting to home and community, and provides website linkages to extend the learning. Content is accurate, relevant, and purposeful for using with the grade and age levels. Components of the software include explorations and investigations, problem sets and challenges, and skill practice.
Methodology
Math and More 5/6 reflects current practice for teaching and learning mathematical concepts and skills. A variety of teaching strategies are used throughout with concepts developed through problem solving, reasoning, and communication. The program is designed to allow students to build upon their prior knowledge and tasks are easily adaptable to meet students' needs. Tasks for individual, paired, small group, and large group learning are included. The software provides opportunities for students to develop conceptual understanding through the virtual manipulation of mathematical objects. The software activities and the classroom-support tasks are engaging for students.
Assessment
Assessment opportunities are identified throughout the Teacher Resource Guide. The software also includes an assessment component. For each skill and concept developed, key observations are identified and linked to a final summary assessment. Strategies for using portfolios, observation, and computer-checked activities are presented throughout the resource. Opportunities for student self-assessment are included.
Format
The Teacher Resource Guide is well organized and easy-to-follow. Lesson plans provide detailed information to support implementation within the Mathematics curriculum. The black-line masters are easy to access [and engaging for students. The software is easy to install and user-friendly as students are given step-by-step instructions throughout. Computer graphics are bright and appealing. The tools used to manipulate mathematical objects are logically organized and clearly explained both on the software and in the Teacher Resource Guide.
Bias
