Math and More 5/6

Publisher's Description

Math and More reflects a vision of teachers and students actively engaged in doing mathematics in ways that connect to their personal interests, their family, their neighbourhood and cultural backgrounds. It builds on the best contemporary research in learning and teaching. It also builds on years of experience and research with technology and technology-based tools for learning.

Math and More 5/6 is part of the Math and More family of mathematics software. There are three units covering topics on Data Management and Probability (Just About Average), Patterning and Algebra (Patterns and Rules) and Geometry and Spatial Sense (A World of Tessellations).

Designed to be implemented at the point of instruction, Math and More supports Active Learning by integrating exploratory and problem-solving software with concrete manipulatives and student print materials. Specialized software makes it possible for students to manipulate objects, explore mathematical ideas and easily record their work. Math and More teacher materials extend a teacher's repertoire of strategies for presenting mathematical ideas, discussing them with students, and assessing student learning.

Math and More meets standards of problem solving and reasoning by posing open ended problems with many solutions and solution strategies and by asking students to explain their thinking as they work. The standard on communication is met as students regularly relate everyday language to mathematical language. Students have frequent opportunities to use physical objects, pictures, diagrams and mathematical symbols to represent mathematical ideas and experiences and to talk aloud and write about their work.

Math and More supports the vision of children as active learners, working on meaningful problems, collaborating with others, reflecting on their own progress and using a variety of resource, including computer based tools. The related vision of the teacher is supported by providing challenging worthwhile mathematical investigations, and emphasizing the teacher's role as facilitator and orchestrator of classroom activity and discussion.
