CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
The Native Dwellings Series supports the learning expectations for the elementary curriculum in Social Studies for Grades 3 to 6 with links to Language, Math, Art, Science, and Music.

Content
Each book in the series presents information about a different type of Native dwelling. The clearly written, age-appropriate text and illustrations help students understand Native cultures and lifestyles. The detailed teacher material includes general activities that apply to all the books, along with specific cross-curricular activities for each individual book. It also contains a bibliography of related books and materials, useful addresses, and blackline masters.

Methodology
The activities in the teacher's guide are suitable for a range of capabilities with a variety of diverse skill-building experiences. The activities promote creative thinking and problem-solving opportunities as students work independently and in groups.

Assessment
There are no assessment strategies or tools provided. Teachers are required to design their own tracking sheets, observation sheets, and checklists for evaluation purposes.

Format
The six softcover books in the Native Dwellings series include both colour and black-and-white drawings that support the text information. The practical, well-organized, easy-to-follow teacher's guide is contained in a three-ring binder with dividers.

The material is presented from a balanced perspective.

Review Recommendation
The Native Dwelling Series is recommended as a supplementary resource for Social Studies curriculum for Grades 3 to 6.
