Curriculum Correlation
The Northern Learning-to-Read Series supports the curriculum in Language for Kindergarten and Grade One with links to the Social Studies curriculum.
Content
This series of 20 little books presents Aboriginal culture in easy-to-read stories. The books have age-appropriate text and colourful illustrations to further early learners' understanding of Aboriginal culture and lifestyle. Information and visual content can be used as springboard for discussions.
Methodology
The stories in these books complement a balanced literacy program by supporting vocabulary acquisition and development of reading strategies. The books can be used in whole group, small group, and individual settings. Teacher-led discussions when reading the individual books would increase the emergent reader's awareness and understanding of Aboriginal culture.
Assessment
While there are no formal assessment strategies included with this resource, the stories provide opportunities for ongoing assessment of student achievement.
Format
The 20 books in this series use colourful illustrations in a variety of mediums to enhance their appeal. The size and shape of the books make them easily accessible by emergent readers.
Bias
The books present a balanced perspective of Aboriginal life, using positive role models and illustrations by Canadian artists. Teachers are reminded to be sensitive when sharing the books with early learners so that they can appreciate the humour that is intended through the illustrations.
