Numeracy at Work supports secondary school curriculum in the Mathematics, Business Studies, Co-op and Preparation for Work programs across Canada in addressing fundamental and essential numeracy skills related to the workplace.

Content
This resource provides relevant and informative information concerning the responsibilities and roles for people in a number of jobs and the need for numeracy skills in those occupations. Each chapter is introduced with a description of a workplace setting and a brief overview of some of the numeracy skills involved in that particular field. A listing of mathematics and reading skills that are developed within that section follow. Worked tasks are provided to model key concepts, followed by student activities that provide opportunities for practice. Answers are provided to each section. A chapter is devoted to developing estimation skills, highlighting their relevance to workplace tasks. Appendices identify and describe specific skills related to workplace experiences.

Methodology
Numerous tasks in a variety of career settings provide opportunities for supporting curriculum concepts. The resource develops strong connections between numeracy skills and workplace applications. Activities allow students to develop fundamental skills and apply them to life applications. Learning tasks may be used in individual or in cooperative group settings.

Assessment
Some of the tasks in each section may be used as assessment tools.

Format
The materials in this resource are contained in a binder for easy access. Labeled dividers that group activities by related concepts are good organizers. Graphics and photographs add to the visual appeal of the learning materials.

Bias
This learning resource could be more representative of the racial and cultural diversity in Canadian society and in the workforce. Teachers will need to make students aware that the workplace experiences described in the resource could vary within the occupation, company, or industry.

Review Recommendation
Numeracy at Work is recommended as a supplementary learning resource to support curriculum in Mathematics, Business Studies, Co-op, and Preparation for Work programs in Canadian secondary schools.
