Numeracy at Work

Publisher's Description

Numeracy at Work is a collection of 25 examples (chapters) of how numbers are used in the worklife of a selected sample of Canadians. Workers were asked about how they used numeracy. Their responses were categorized in five application settings: 1) Money Math, 2) Scheduling or Budgeting and Accounting Math, 3) Measurement and Calculation Math, 4) Data Analysis Math, and 5) Numerical Estimation.

Numeracy at Work has not been designed to address specific occupational requirements or to parallel sequential curricula. The emphasis is on representing the multiplicity of work tasks that require numeracy skills.

Numeracy at Work is presented with aids to assist teachers and instructors who are interested in using these applied work activities to enrich instruction. The Appendices, which serve as resources for teachers and instructors, provide supplemental information on the essential skill of numeracy as presented by Human Resources Development Canada. This collection adds to the concept of what it means to be numerate.
