Curriculum Correlation
The program matches The Ontario Curriculum, Science and Technology, (1998) topic "Space" in the Earth and Space Systems Strand for Grade 6. It also provides many opportunities for working with scientific data and experimentation which supports many of the specific expectations for Grades 3-6.

The program supports many of the Reading, Writing, and Oral and Visual Communication expectations for Grades 3-6 from The Ontario Curriculum, Language, (1997). There are many opportunities to communicate information and to read and write for various purposes. Students also use language conventions and new vocabulary and analyze and produce media works.

Depending on the teacher's selection of activities, the program supports The Ontario Curriculum, Mathematics, (1997), for Grades 3-6 by addressing many of the overall expectations for Number Sense and Numeration (comparing and ordering whole numbers, fractions and decimals; estimating; basic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; and problem solving). Many of the overall expectations of Data Management (collecting, comparing, displaying, and analyzing data) and some of the expectations for Measurement (comparing measurements) are also addressed.

Content
The text uses excellent factual material in different formats with appropriate terms and vocabulary. Colourful graphics motivate reading. Up-to-date, accurate information about space is offered in many different ways and technological advances in space exploration are discussed. The book's interesting and colourful layout would appeal to the Grades 5 and 6 students although the plot of the story is aimed at the younger students. Most measurements are non-metric and Canadian accomplishments in space are not included.

Methodology
Teachers choose from multidimensional, non-sequential, learning tasks that are clearly laid out and encourage critical thinking. Clearly defined objectives, sound instructional methodology, and background information are given in each lesson. Many opportunities are provided to gather and organize information through both independent and co-operative activities. Lessons often include art and hands-on activities. Modifications and More Ideas are suggested to alter the level of difficulty to meet the needs of the students.

Assessment
Simple evaluation strategies are clearly laid out and extensive references (print, video, and web sites) are suggested.

Format
The good-quality, hardcover text uses excellent design and graphics to engage the learners. Unconventional print styles and layout will appeal particularly to older students and a variety of entry and exit points allow for easy navigation. The Teacher's Guide is well organized and useful. Some student work sheets are presented at a beginning and an advanced level.

The CD-ROM version includes video clips and animation effects. Many choices allow students to interact according to ability or interest and most will use it intuitively. Phrases are highlighted as read, and icons provide oral cues. An interesting, simple-to-use drawing program offers many creative ways for students to participate. An extensive glossary and Read-Me file help teachers assist students.

The kit contains 20 copies of the student Learning Books which would be an ideal class set for supplementary use.

Bias
Teachers should be aware that one character is described as having a "big ol' head" and as "not really bright."
