CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
People Savers supports the Health and Physical Education curriculum in Kindergarten to grade 6 in Canadian schools for topics involving safety in the home, school and community.

Content
The background information about injury prevention and first aid is presented clearly and at a level appropriate for the intended audience. All instructions are clear with suitable introduction and follow-up. Safety messages are explicit and relevant with up-to-date references. While the content is specific to the age/grade level, there are opportunities for teachers to vary or adapt activities according to the prior learning and individual experiences of student groups.

Methodology
People Savers presents a variety of teaching/learning strategies that provide interesting and engaging experiences for students. The activities can be used to build on skill sets and to develop higher order thinking skills as students work independently or as a member of a group. The teacher-directed lessons can be easily integrated into curriculum at the various grade levels.

Assessment
Although there is no formal assessment included in the resource materials, teachers can assess and evaluate student progress through observation.

Format
The colourful student workbooks provide clear illustrations that enhance and support the lesson content at all grade levels. The facilitator's handbook is well organized and presents essential teaching points clearly with practical suggestions for each grade grouping. It offers background information about the learner at each stage of development as well as suggestions for practical application of the concepts. Appendices are well developed and provide good teacher support .

Bias
This learning resource is presented from a balanced perspective. The student workbook and facilitator's manual identifies the importance of diversity. The illustrations in the student workbooks represent a wide range of youth engaged in various activities.

Review Recommendation
People Savers is recommended as a learning resource to support the safety component of Health and Physical Education curriculum in Kindergarten to grade 6.
