Content
The resource provides information and activities that use a number of literacy skills that are essential in the workplace. The information presented in the resource is up-to-date and factual. The content is Canadian and relevant to the Canadian workplace. The information and activities presented are easy to follow and the technical terms are clearly explained. The resource contains graphics and visuals to support the lessons. One section relates to worker safety and a safe working environment. Reading skills are cumulative through the chapters. There is a clear connection between the activities and the way in which they would be used in a variety of workplaces.
Methodology
The resource is designed both for students working on their own and for an instructor-led educational setting. Most activities are student-based. A variety of reading strategies are taught and practiced. Skills such as chart reading, scanning, reading tables, and information seeking are included. Activities are presented in a step-by-step method that allows for the learning and practising of skills. Opportunities to demonstrate understanding are presented at the end of each chapter.
Assessment
There are numerous activities in each section that allow for practice and self-assessment of the applicable skills. Answers are provided at the end of each chapter. Reading reflection sheets are provided. Summaries and Exploring Further sections are provided at the end of each chapter.
Format
The organization of the binder supports independent learning and is consistent and appropriate for the intended use. The table of contents and glossary enhance the use of the resource. The resources recommended by the Reading at Work: Workplace Reader are largely Canadian.
