The resource has been designed to meet the learning expectations for Grade 10 Civics (CHV2O) as provided in The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10: Canadian and World Studies, 2005, (revised).
Content
The information provided in Know Your Ride concerning "curbsiders" (imposters who pose as private individuals), OMVIC (the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council), and how to protect oneself is current, relevant, and presented in a depth adequate to support knowledge and understanding.
Methodology
The DVD provides numerous viewing options – including full and teacher-guided versions, both with and without subtitles, as well as a Review Time segment – to support a wide variety of learning and teaching strategies. The presentation style of the DVD is appropriate for the intended audience and includes a youth-to-youth format using common slang for teenagers, a well-paced video and storyline, and appropriate background visuals and music.
Assessment
A wide range of strategies are provided, including tasks such as the creation of a guide or pamphlet, a public service announcement, a press release, a print ad, a video/podcast/radio broadcast, a rescission letter, and a letter to an MP (p.13). The above strategies provide educators with a wide range of evaluation and reporting data throughout the achievement chart, i.e., Knowledge/Understanding, Thinking, Application, and Communication.
Format
The DVD is easy to use for both teachers and students, allowing for independent and/or home use if desired. The multiple viewing versions allow for numerous viewing and instructional options and provide assistance to viewers who may require language or auditory assistance. Five entry/exit points in the teacher-guided versions allow for teacher direction throughout the DVD and allow teachers to accommodate for various learning styles and levels of study.
Bias
Know Your Ride provides both English and French versions to accommodate language preferences and to reflect Canada's two official languages. The characters featured in the DVD represent a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds.
