Curriculum Correlation
The C.A.R.E. Kit supports the implementation of the Physical and Health Education curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 3. Its specific focus is personal safety through the prevention of child abuse.
Content
The kit includes a resource guide, message and discussion cards, a puppet, posters, CD, storybook, and parent information. The resource guide includes background information about child sexual abuse and a list of Helping Resources found across the country. The sections of the guide dealing with children with special needs cover topics such as signs of sexual abuse unique to children with special needs, reporting abuse of a child with special needs, and a list of resources specifically for people with special needs. The activities in the kit are designed to help children recognize and avoid unsafe situations. The information is presented in adequate depth to support knowledge and understanding, and is based on credible resources and expertise. Graphics included on the discussion and message cards are relevant and help students to access the content.
Methodology
The program delivery is designed to be flexible; however, it should take two to five weeks to complete and is best used on a daily basis. The instructional strategies are varied and include teacher-directed discussion, individual and group activities, and role-plays. The resource engages the learners in exploring/investigating and applying concepts with regard to personal safety and prevention of child abuse. The activities found throughout the program provide students with opportunities to communicate their understanding of new concepts and procedures (e.g., Personal Safety Rules). The tasks are open-ended and require problem solving on the part of the learner. The ideas in this resource are presented in the appropriate context. However, some scenarios may be frightening to some students. It is highly recommended that presenters attend a training session prior to implementing this program.
Assessment
The discussion questions found throughout the program and the activities in which the students engage provide opportunities for on-going assessment.
Format
The message cards are designed to outline the key concepts and the discussion cards provide real-life illustrations to reinforce the key concepts. Each lesson builds on the previous lesson. A children's book Your Body is Yours! and a CD with the song My Body summarize and reinforce the key messages from the message and discussion cards. Trusty the puppet also emphasizes messages taught. The resource guide provides clear and detailed instruction of how to deliver the program. The picture communication symbols included in the kit support delivery of the program to special need students. The materials are of high quality, are durable, and come in a sturdy box for safe storage.
Bias
The C.A.R.E. Kit presents a balanced perspective. The names, pictures, and scenarios used in the kit reflect the diversity of the Canadian culture. The learning opportunities provided portray all age groups, body types, capabilities, and special needs.
Review Recommendation
The C.A.R.E. Kit is recommended as a resource to support curriculum delivery in the area of Physical and Health Education from Kindergarten to Grade 3. It is also recommended to support curriculum topics related to decision making, problem solving, and personal safety.
Additional Notes:
It is strongly suggested that presenters participate in a training session prior to using this program. Changes have been made to this seventh edition published in 2007: introduction of Personal Safety Rules, focus on experiential activities to engage the children, addition of material that reflects the diversity of Canada's evolving communities and a focus on distinguishing appropriate and inappropriate behaviour. The kit is a prevention program; it is not designed to elicit disclosures of abuse, and does not address such situations. Since these might happen, however, it is important that presenters equip themselves with the correct information and skills to deal with disclosures in an appropriate manner.
