CSC Evaluation

Curriculum Correlation
Step into the World of Workplace Learning integrates with intermediate/senior curriculum across Canada related to workplace skills, e.g., career education, math essentials, and ESL (adults).

Content
The resource provides examples of authentic workplace documents as a context for developing skills essential to the workplace and to life experiences. Key terminology is identified for each situation and relevant careers and occupations are highlighted. The Analysis sections provide a wealth of relevant background information. Canadian examples are used throughout and are reflective of the Canadian workplace. The resource includes a theoretical framework section that establishes the importance of document use in workplace environments and the complexities of reading and writing those texts, e.g., graphs, legal agreements, data charts, schematics.

Methodology
The instructional strategies and learning experiences are suitable for the intended audience. Activities that require problem-solving and higher-order thinking are relatively narrow in scope. User Tips provide practical suggestions for integrating workplace materials within curriculum areas such as reading and writing, thereby emphasizing the importance of literacy and numeracy as life skills.

Assessment
Assessment strategies and suggestions are not included; however, by successfully completing the tasks students demonstrate their acquisition of relevant workplace skills.

Format
This print resource is well organized within a binder with dividers for the various sections. The layout is appealing and facilitates use. Blackline masters and copies of documents are provided for student activities.

Bias
The resource is presented from a balanced perspective. The needs of learning disabled and ESL students are effectively addressed in the "Adapting the User Tips" section.

Review Recommendation
Step into the World of Workplace Learning is recommended as a supplementary resource to support curricula related to workplace preparation.
