Step into the World of Workplace Learning

Publisher's Description

This is a collection of authentic workplace materials that illustrates how literacy skills such as reading, writing, and document use are required at work in Canada. The documents are taken directly from real companies operating in the marketplace. The collection includes forms, contracts, tables, charts, graphs, and schematics, as well as a broad range of other sample materials. They are presented in a way that relates them to the nine Essential Skills, and show the practical applications of how transferable skills are actually used in the Canadian workplace. Each material is accompanied by an example of how it is used in the workplace, a description of its features, and suggestions on how it could be used in a classroom activity.

Educators and trainers can use the collection as a tool to place curriculum in a meaningful context that shows the connections between the classroom and the workplace. This resource helps students see the relevance of learning objectives and explore career possibilities, and promotes problem-solving skills.

The Essential Skills website features the Authentic Workplace Materials online, as well as over 180 occupational profiles and specific examples of practical applications. We invite you to visit at http://www.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/essentialskills.
