Content
Super Phonics, Level 2 is a software program based on nine learning modules: Short Vowels, Long Vowels, Consonant Blends, Hard and Soft C and G, R-Controlled Vowels, Vowel Digraphs, Vowel Diphthongs, and Vowel Sounds of Y. Within each module, there is a choice of skill practice and reinforcement activities, e.g., Word Families, Hear and Match, Picture Match, Rhyming Words, Missing Letters, Match the Sounds, Sentences, Comprehension, Review, etc. The activities reinforce visual and auditory discrimination, as well as comprehension, memory, and spelling skills. The language used by the narrator is clear and easy to understand.
Methodology
Super Phonics, Level 2 focuses on basic phonics skills with a repetitive skill-and-drill approach. Skill development is gradual and builds on previous skills. The teacher directs student learning through the choice of module. Within the chosen module, students complete the activities independently and their responses are recorded and tracked. After two incorrect answers, the program automatically moves the student to the next question.
Assessment
The Marks Manager tracks students' scores for the activities completed in each module or skill area. When students re-enter the program, they are taken to the skill area they most recently worked in. Students see their overall progress after they exit the program. The teacher can view and print a standard report that shows the student's score for each phonics module and an activity report that shows the student's score for each type of activity.
Format
Super Phonics, Level 2 has a simple and consistent format. The lettering is large and distinct. Audio directions help students navigate the program and complete the activities. Students use the icons to repeat instructions, access word lists, and move within the program. Success is rewarded with colourful graphics and encouraging audio prompts.
Bias
The learning resource is presented from a balanced perspective. Canadian examples are used as appropriate.
