The Vikings, Cabot and Cartier book is part of the Explorer Chronicles series that can be used to enhance a unit on Explorers. Colourful, appealing graphics include maps, photographs, artworks, and timelines to engage students in historical research. In-depth information is accurate and up-to-date and is persented in straightforward, factual language. Explanatory information about ships, navigational tools, artifacts, etc. is interesting for students and facilitates their understanding. Textual material includes poetry, detailed captions, and quotations. The discussion and investigations build on students' prior knowledge.
Methodology
Although teaching/learning strategies are not included, there is a range of information that teachers can use to enhance activities and consolidate learning. Opportunities for historical discussions are generated by the content and detailed information provides background for teachers and for student research. There are opportunities for working in small groups to build collaboration skills. Cross-curricular links, e.g., suggested novels that support literacy development, are included.
Assessment
While assessment is not directly addressed in the resource, the activities can be adapted and/or used to determine student achievement.
Format
The resource is of high qualtiy and is professional presented. There are many entry and exit points to using the resource as a supplement to a classroom program. An inviting layout includes colourful graphics and various fonts and text spacing to engage students. A table of contents and index promote student use. Additional support is provided through a glossary, suggested novels and non-fiction texts for students, websites, and places to visit.
