The maps primarily support Social Studies and Canadian and World Studies curriculum, but also support implementation of broad-based curriculum. Some of the maps may also support Science curriculum through the inset maps (e.g., Vegetation, Climate, Plate Tectonics). There is a connection to numeracy and literacy (e.g., map-reading skills, graphical literacy).
Content
The map content supports the purpose identified in the map's title. The maps are readable and legible, facilitating classroom instruction. The maps are multi-purpose and cross-purpose and can be used with a range of curriculum, primarily Social Studies and Canadian/World Studies. The maps support the development of literacy and numeracy skills. Insets support cartographic conventions and supplement the use of the map.
Methodology
The maps are grade-level appropriate and support students in acquiring knowledge and skills in appropriate curriculum areas; e.g. the level of detail and information increases as the level of the map increases.
Assessment
The maps can be used to support a variety of assessment practices within curriculum subject areas.
Format
There is consistency between the maps in look, format, and information. The material the maps are printed on is plastic-coated, resistant to tearing, and can be written on with a water-based marker. The map sizes are appropriate for classroom use. The maps are mounted on metal rails that can be mounted in front of blackboards by using hooks or a hook-and-rail combination, and meet safety requirements. All of the maps reflect proper cartographic conventions that lead to an understanding of the map.
Bias
The content is presented from a balanced perspective (e.g., sensitivity to cultural and historic issues, representation of disputed territories). The colours chosen consider students' ability to differentiate between shades and gradations of a colour. The projection used on the map ensures that there is no visual bias that could lead to misinterpretation of the information illustrated (e.g., Robison for the World, and Lambert Aximuthal Equal Area for Canada) and is appropriate to the individual map's purpose.
