B&B Publishing has been producing educational and related materials for nearly 40 years. During this time the publishers have developed a consistent cartographic and graphic treatment for their maps, as well as a consistent approach to the treatment of data. The use of colors, symbols, fonts, and type size is homogenous throughout the collection. Colours are lively and bold to capture the interest of children, while the type size is fairly large to facilitate reading. The contour lines are generalized to facilitate an understanding of geographical concepts. For example, although there may be sharp drops in elevations in the sea close to shore, the borders of the colours have been slightly smudged to show progression. Each B&B Wall Map takes into consideration the needs of its users, beginning in kindergarten—when young children first see a map as a brightly coloured poster; they later learn introductory map-reading, the notions of space and time, the rudiments of cartography, generic and specific toponymy, orientation, the use of symbols and graphic and numerical scales, and the decoding of the legend. Children acquire literacy and numeracy skills while studying social studies, geography, and history concepts. The map's dimensions, along with its laminated and washable surface, make it ideal for small-group activities and cooperative learning. B&B Wall Maps are the only series of educational thematic maps of this magnitude in Canada.
