The learning resource What Kind of World? supports the Social Studies curriculum for Grades 5 to 8 across Canada.
Content
The resource is divided into three sequential sections in which students learn about the United Nations as an organization, role-play world situations in which the United Nations takes an active part, and learn about their rights and responsibilities. The information is presented in a clear and easy-to-understand context that does not require learners to have any previous knowledge about the United Nations. Young Canadians learn about their country and the United Nations in an engaging and relevant manner.
Methodology
This resource presents content and concepts in an appropriate context in which students are able to learn, practise, and demonstrate their knowledge about the United Nations by relating it to their daily lives. In group problem-solving activities, students work in-role to learn the significant contributions that the United Nations makes to the world.
Assessment
While there are no formal assessment strategies suggested, the role-play situations can be used to assess the learner's understanding.
Format
This print learning resource is organized within a pocketed folder. It contains a table of contents, diagrams, role-playing cards, and reproducible student work sheets. There is excellent background information about the United Nations for the teacher.
Bias
The information is presented from a balanced perspective and in a context that promotes Canadian participation in world issues.
