Curriculum Correlation
Wishes and Worries supports the Personal Development and Health curriculum as a supplemental resource.

Content
The book provides knowledge about the topic of alcoholism and its effects on families. Wishes and Worries offers an appropriate way to introduce the topic of parental substance abuse and to initiate discussion with children. The illustrations and language are appropriate and provide opportunities for children to understand their options for obtaining help. Some unsafe situations that occur with an alcoholic parent in a household are discussed. Users of the resource are cautioned to address these unsafe aspects with the students.

Methodology
The Information for Adults and Information for Kids, sections at the beginning of the book offer opportunities to utilize the resource in a variety of ways depending upon the child?s level of understanding and readiness to address this sensitive topic. Oral and written communication could occur before, during, and after the story, but there are no specific activities or opportunities for children to apply research skills. The topic explores real-life situations and current issues that require children to think, problem-solve, and make decisions on issues that may be present in their lives.

Assessment
As a resource meant to address the mental well-being of students, there is not a requirement for assessment and evaluation.

Format
The format of the book is engaging with clear and concise language, and appropriate illustrations.

Bias
Wishes and Worries presents a balanced point of view. Racial diversity is recognized and substantially included by using illustrations to teach students about diversity in Canadian society.

Review Recommendation
Wishes and Worries is recommended to support the Personal Development and Health curriculum for students ages 5-10. Due to the sensitive topic of the book, it is recommended that if the book is to be used in a school context, parent/caregiver approval be obtained prior to using the book with individual students.

Additional Notes: As this is a sensitive topic, the resource must be used carefully and with sensitivity. If used in a school, the topic of alcoholism in a family must be broached in a safe, caring manner and should not be shared with the child without the consent of the parent/caregiver. This resource should not be used independently by children.
