Locally Developed Courses

The new Ontario Secondary Schools, Grades 9 to 12: Program and Diploma Requirements (OSS), 1999, enables school boards to develop three local compulsory-credit courses for Grade 9, one in each of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, and Science. For Grade 10, optional-credit courses can be developed for the same three subjects. To provide a model of how these courses could be developed, the Ministry of Education has funded the sample Course Profiles listed in the links below.

The Guide to Locally Developed Courses, Grades 9 to 12: Approved Requirements and Procedures provides information to assist school boards in preparing their request to the Ministry of Education for approval of their own locally developed courses, under OSS. The document is available on the ministry's website at http://www.edu.gov.on.ca.

Guidance and Career Education Course Profiles

Teacher writing teams prepared Course Profiles to support the two new related courses for co-operative education, Discovering the Workplace (GLD2O) and Navigating the Workplace (GLN4O), which will be included in the Guidance and Career Education policy document currently under revision. These Grades 10 and 12 Course Profiles are designed to be equally useful to teachers in both public and Catholic schools. The writing teams were comprised of teachers from both systems.

Note:

The Course Profiles may be used in their entirety, in part, or adapted. The Course Profiles, funded by the Ministry of Education, have been developed by partnerships of school boards and subject associations. They have been written specifically for teachers by teachers by teams of secondary teachers across Ontario who were selected for their expertise in a particular subject area and for their ability to help with the implementation of the new Ontario Curriculum.

OCC (Ontario Curriculum Centre, now the Ontario service of Curriculum Services Canada) was asked to lead a peer review of each profile, examining them for consistency with the curriculum policy and for accuracy and currency of content, sound methodology and assessment, suggestions for accommodations, and inclusivity. The Ministry of Education also examined the Course Profiles for consistency with policy.
