Introductory Sessions

Using several different models of effective instructional strategies to engage the participants in active learning, these sessions demonstrate how the TIPS resource supports teachers in Grade 7, Grade 8, and Grade 9 Applied mathematics classrooms.

This introductory session familiarizes the participants with the TIPS resource.

The intent of this session is for participants to explore technologies and manipulatives included in TIPS lessons.

Session 5: TIPS – Teaching Inclusively Promotes Success
This session focuses on instruction and the variety of strategies needed to address the learning modes and readiness of adolescent students in a classroom. It promotes the idea that suggested strategies are "necessary for some, good for all..."

Session 6: TIPS - Teachers Investigate Probable Status (of Learning)
Classroom Assessment (Part 1) - The focus of the session is how assessment is key to effective teaching and learning. The session considers assessment for learning and assessment of learning.

Session 7: TIPS - Teachers Investigate Probable Status (of Learning)
Classroom Assessment (Part 2) - This session is the second of three sessions on assessment. Participants work collaboratively to develop assessment tasks that take into consideration the four mathematical processes and the different learning modes.

Classroom Assessment (Part 3) - This session is the follow-up to the previous two sessions on classroom assessment. Participants develop and share summative assessment tasks.

The Geometer's Sketchpad® Tutorial Sessions

These sessions familiarize participants with The Geometer's Sketchpad® (GSP) and ways to introduce it to their students. TriSkatathon Tutorials 1, 2, and 3 as well as the summative task file (TriSkate Activity) are provided here along with the corresponding worksheets for each tutorial. Other related files are on The Geometer's Sketchpad® Tutorial CD-ROM, available from your board representative. It contains multiple files related to using these Tutorials.

Session 1: TriSkatathon – Getting onto the Skateboard
Participants learn basic GSP skills using Tutorial 1.

Lesson Developer's Sessions

This series examines instructional and assessment frameworks contained in TIPS and uses the templates that help embed these frameworks and research into unit and lesson planning. Connections made to mathematical literacy link planning and delivery to the goal of mathematical literacy for all.
