What are some ways that students can learn about the properties of 2D shapes? What are some effective strategies for teaching the properties of 2D shapes?

Student's capacity to conceptualize properties and relationships of 2D shapes is developed in stages and is fostered by each student's experiences. According to the Van-Hiele taxonomy of geometric thinking the first stage, Level 0, Visualization, is where students focus on what individual shapes "look like." At Level 1, Analysis, students conceive shapes as being part of a group of similar shapes and begin to notice their properties. At Level 2, Informal Deduction, students have greater capacity to apply "if then" reasoning and can consider simple, logical arguments about properties of 2D shapes. Through students' physical actions of folding, measuring and drawing, their geometric thinking is can be developed, represented, and discussed in relation to formal geometric definitions.

During this webcast, Dr. Akihiko Takahashi with a group of Ontario mathematics educators, a grade 4/5 classroom teacher and grades 4 and 5 students are engaged in learning about the properties of 2D shapes through paper folding and the use of different materials, such as compasses, protractors and set squares. The teaching strategies presented for study by Dr. Takahashi, were developed, implemented and refined through a process of lesson study by classroom teachers.
