Networks provide educators with opportunities to interact with each other within the boundaries of their own schools and boards or far beyond those traditional boundaries. These networks take many forms, some formal, others informal, and can include members representative of one role or of a variety of roles. Networks operate on the belief that when professionals come together and share their expertise, they build new knowledge, and that new understanding leads to a change in practice that will ultimately result in improved practice and student achievement.
This webcast will feature researcher Stephen Katz, who shares insights on what makes networks effective, based on his research and experience. He suggests that six characteristics consistently emerge as being essential to effective networks:
- Purpose and focus: participants need to become knowledgeable about their focus
- Leadership-full: using collaborative, shared, or multi-level leadership; developing the capacities of others becomes essential
- Collaboration
- Inquiry
- Accountability
- Building Capacity and Support
This webcast also introduces five networks, each unique in its composition and operation. Network participants will share with you the goals, challenges, successes, and lessons learned from their network experiences.
As you watch the webcast, think about aspects of each network that might meet the needs of your learning community. The following questions are intended to stimulate professional thinking and dialogue in the service of developing a network:
- Why are we meeting? What is our purpose or focus?
- How can we best provide honest and critical feedback to each other while creating a safe and supportive environment?
- What do we need to do to ensure that we are committed to personal and collective professional learning?
- What actions are we going to take in between each of our sessions to further advance or deepen our learning experiences within the network?
- How might the participants in our network share learning experiences within the network across our own school or board?
