The government of Ontario has made improved student achievement in literacy and numeracy the centerpiece of its mandate. The first step in realizing this goal requires that every student in Ontario will reach their full potential in literacy and numeracy. By 2008, 75% of twelve year old students will reach or exceed the provincial standard.
The Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat has developed a rigorous and precise research-based plan that includes nine strategies designed to meet the diverse needs of all students, including particular learners that may be "at risk" such as Aboriginal learners, black learners, English language learners, boys, and students in special education programs.
This webcast is designed to share research-based, system-level, and school-level effective practices that ultimately result in improved student achievement for all. It is intended to stimulate professional dialogue, collaborative problem-solving, and action focused on improved student learning.
Effective educators are lifelong learners, deeply reflective in their practice, collaborative, and focused on improving achievement for all students. Research clearly shows that "Nothing is as important for student learning as the individual teacher and what that person knows, believes and can do" (Jon Saphier, Matt King, John D'Auria. National Staff Development Council. Vol. 27 No 2, Spring 2006).
This webcast acknowledges several key initiatives funded by the Secretariat that occurred in 2005-06 throughout Ontario, including:
- Unlocking Potential for District-Wide Reform
- Trent Tutoring Partnership
- The Oral Literacy Research Project
- The Toronto District Africentric Summer Institute
- Curriculum Mapping and Numeracy
This webcast also highlights how in 2006, the Secretariat is sharpening its focus to include five particular areas: Focused Interventions, Capacity Building, Equity of Outcome, Community Outreach and Engagement and Communication. The following initiatives are featured in this webcast:

- Statistical Neighbours
- Schools on the Move: Lighthouse Program
- Leading and Learning: Improving Student Achievement in Schools Facing Challenging Circumstances
The Secretariat will continue, with indefatigable zeal, to build upon the spirit of innovation that already exists in many schools and boards. We will seek new avenues for the engagement of all education stakeholders so that they participate fully in helping Ontario's students prepare for a future that requires higher levels of skill in literacy and numeracy.
